Long Single Mattress

Long Single Mattress

We can make mattress to any size including long single mattresses.

Long single mattresses are normally used in a commercial setting or are pieced together to form a king size mattress.

It is very often quite hard to find linen for long single mattresses so we urge customers to be vigilant when choosing this size as it is a bit more expensive due to this size being made in smaller quantities.

What is a mattress ensemble?

What is a mattress ensemble?

The word ensemble when it comes to mattresses and bases is commonly misused. Firstly before defining an ensemble we have to make clear two other definitions.

A bed or a mattress is what sits on top of the base. The mattress sits on top of the base. Some people may loosely term a mattress as just a bed, or some may call an entire bed frame a bed. In this case we are going to just use the word mattress.

A base is the upholstered wooden structure that the mattress sits or for support, some people also call this a foundation. In this case we are going to call a bed base just a base.

Now an ensemble is just a mattress and base or alternatively we call it a set. So an ensemble is a mattress and a base. Many people incorrectly call the base an ensemble and this is incorrect.

Mattress in a box

Mattress in a boxBecoming ever so increasingly popular are mattresses in a box. They are normally made out of pocket springs or polyurethane foam and are then vacuum compressed and rolled into a box.

At first glance this raises eyebrows and speculation but the technology used has significantly improved and offers significant savings in delivery costs associated with normal mattresses.

Pocket Springs

Pocket Springs

Pocket Spring Mattresses

What is a pocket spring?

A pocket spring is an individual coil spring that is normally encased in a synthetic fabric casing then glued or stitched together to form a support unit for a mattress. As each individual coil is independent of another this reduces any motion transfer when sleeping. Having individual coils enables coils to be arranged in zones of different densities, allowing areas of increased support where needed.

Generally pocket spring systems contain greater volumes of air which can pass through so sleep slightly cooler than all foam mattresses. We have a great article on sleeping cool right here.

Why you shouldn’t buy a pocket spring mattress before reading this.

Types of pocket spring

There are now a wide variety of pocket springs on the market with varying gauges, sizes and arrangements. There are two predominant pocket spring systems in the Australian market and three other specialty systems that we will discuss.

Spun Bond Pocket Springs

Standard spring unit either glued or sewed together. Offers breathability and responsiveness over all foam mattresses and better responsiveness vs normal bonnell spring units.

High Tensile Pocket Springs

Used in most of our mattresses there pocket springs featured a thicker metal coil that has undergone a specialty heat treatment for better durability over traditional pocket springs. Spring units come in varying pressure zones for tailored sleeping.

Pocket in pocket Springs

These offer a plusher initial feel and a firmer middle feel layer. These feature a smaller diameter firmer coil inside a larger medium pocket coil. These are significantly more time consuming to manufacturer and thus are only found in the upper end of support systems.

Pocket on top of pocket springs

Used in softer or plusher mattresses to reduce incidences of body impressions and mattress settlement (a normal function of high loft mattresses). These mattresses feature another smaller softer coil system above the support coil system in the pillow top to provide comfort to the user. These systems have in the vicinity of 1500 to 2500 springs in the unit and are extremely heavy.

High Density Arrangement pocket springs

The gaps normally found between the inner support springs are filled with smaller diameter coil springs to provide a much firmer support system. A very specialised system and rarely used due to the firmness level it provides.
